The legacy dialogue can be the most powerful dialogue of all. After all, in the long run, what is more important, the money we leave or the messages we leave with it?

One of my sons really stunned me this past year when he asked me, “Dad, do you plan on leaving us an inheritance someday?”

“Yes I do,” I answered.

“Well, would you consider giving some of it to me early so I could join you in helping this mission in Africa that you’re working with?”

I thought my heart would burst at this suggestion.

“I certainly would,” I told him, “but I’d need to run it by your three siblings to give them the same opportunity.”

The other three children were exuberant at the idea. Today there stands a leadership training center in northern Kenya that is my four children’s inheritance at work, long before I had ever imagined.

Let’s begin to think of legacy beginning today instead of when we are gone. It’s much better to give with warm hands and open eyes than cold hands and closed eyes.
