Anger can be a useful visitor but a destructive resident.

Anger plays an important role in our lives. Without a sense of righteous indignation, injustices don’t get righted, crimes don’t receive retribution, and needs don’t get met. To be a force for good we must allow a place for both righteous indignation as well as compassion for those most affected.

The harm of course is when that anger is allowed to take over and spills out into chaotic lashing and white noise. We have all witnessed what happens when anger is not restrained and properly ordered … It truly is a useful visitor but a destructive resident.

I remember once when I was a teenager and lashed out at someone in my family, my mother pulled me aside and said, “Have you ever shaken up a Coke bottle and removed the top? Once you let that happen you can’t get the Coke back in the bottle. Let things settle inside you before you open up.” It was a simple lesson I never forgot.
