A bad attitude is worse than bad form, because my bad form can’t infect you, but my attitude can.
Once I was in a golf match with a teaching professional. I hit a really bad tee shot and when I glanced in his direction he had turned his head away and said to me, “I can’t begin to explain what just happened and I don’t want that image in my head.” We had a good laugh over that — my form was just that bad. The truth is we don’t want to watch poor form when we know a better way of doing things, but my bad form is not viral in nature, i.e. you can’t “catch it.”
My attitude and demeanor however are a different matter. Speaking of golf, I vividly remember the people I’d rather not spend four hours with on a golf course because of their attitudes. Complaining, grumbling, whining, self-loathing because of their lack of desired results. I recently played with a fellow who had just the opposite attitude: took everything in stride, thrilled to be outdoors among the elements and rejoicing at everything that went right and discarding mistakes with a shrug and “Oh well, still better than working.” His positive attitude was viral as well and it buoyed all of us in the group.
